TLC Operating Instructions

It is important that you carefully read these instructions before using the TLC Knee Scooter. You have rented or purchased a TLC Knee Scooter, a medical device designed to maximize mobility during recovery from foot or ankle surgery or injury. To augment these written instructions, your health professional or A Leg Up are available to demonstrate and/or instruct you in the use of the TLC Knee Scooter.

CAUTION:

  • As with any new physical activity, instruction, practice and common sense are necessary for proper and safe use of the TLC Knee Scooter. Practicing proper TLC Knee Scooter operation will increase your skill and confidence and gradually increasing the time you spend using the TLC Knee Scooter will allow your muscles to adjust to this new activity.

Preparing the Knee Scooter for Use:

  1. Check the position of the platform on the TLC Knee Scooter to be sure it is properly TLC Knee Scooter picture set for your foot injury. Look closely at the TLC Knee Scooter. The platform should be off-center to the left for a right foot injury and off-center to the right for a left foot injury. (For example the TLC Knee Scooter pictured on the right is adjusted for a left leg injury.)
  2. If it is not set for the correct (injured) side, adjust the platform by removing the platform pin, lifting the platform off of the TLC Knee Scooter frame and turning it 180° to the correct (injured) Adjusting TLC knee scooter platformfoot side; off-center to the left for a right-foot injury and off-center to the right for a left-foot injury.   3. Once the platform is positioned for the correct (injured) side, replace the platform in the TLC Knee Scooter frame and reinsert the platform pin. The edge of the platform should be aligned with the edge of the frame on the uninjured foot side. (See images in #2 on right.)
  4. The two platform pads, (1-large and 1-small), attached to the platform via Velcro strips. The larger pad attaches on the front of the platform, (nearest the handlebars), and the smaller pad attaches on the back. Each pad should align with its end of the platform. (See image #3 on right.)   5. To adjust the height of the handlebar, stand on the pushing-foot side of the TLC Knee Scooter. Lock the parking brake by depressing the hand brake lever and then pushing in the parking brake pin. Release the quick-release clamp on the T-tube, adjust the handlebar height to a comfortable, upright fit and then relock the quick-release clamp. (See image #4 on right.)

Moving With the TLC Knee Scooter:

  1. Grip the handlebars with both hands.   2. Release the parking brake and propel yourself forward or backward with your pushing foot while keeping the knee of your injured foot centered on the front pad. Move slowly so that you can stop safely using your pushing foot. The hand brake may be used if needed but is primarily designed to keep the scooter stationary.

Using the Hand and Parking Brakes:

  1. The braking wheel must be in contact with the floor and weight must be on the TLC Knee Scooter for the hand brake to work properly.TLC knee Scooter hand brake
  2. Depress the hand brake lever on the handlebar to engage the hand brake. When the hand brake lever is fully depressed, the pressure of the brake mechanism on the braking wheel should prevent the wheel from turning.
  3. To set the parking brake, depress the brake lever and then push down on the button-lock located on the brake lever. To unlock the brake, depress the brake lever until the button-lock releases. (See image #6 on right.)

WARNING:

  • Because the TLC Knee Scooter is relatively lightweight, using the hand brake while the TLC Knee Scooter is in motion may cause an abrupt stop.

Adjusting the Brake:

  1. The brake tension can be adjusted with the nuts at either end of the brake cable. Turning the screw clockwise will loosen the brake and turning the screw counter clockwise will tighten the brake.
  2. If the TLC Knee Scooter was shipped to you, when you return it, please be sure to pack it so that the hand lever is collapsed. (See image #7 on right.)

GENERAL WARNINGS:

  • Do not use the TLC Knee Scooter on or near stairs or while using mind-altering drugs, alcohol or while suffering from dizziness.
  • Do not use the TLC Knee Scooter to pull yourself up from a seated or any other position.
  • Use caution when moving from carpeted to hard surface floors, on any rough surfaces and when changing surface levels (such as when transitioning between sidewalk and/or a curb and/or a street).
  • Check the TLC Knee Scooter frequently for loose pins, nuts or bolts. Also, check the quick release clamp on the T-tube. Do not use the TLC Knee Scooter if any are missing. Contact A Leg Up for instructions.
